I was watching the Tonight Show Monday night and Jay Leno had one spectacular guest. Not Jimmy Fallon, he’s retarded. No, the great guest I’m talking about was astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. He was a very entertaining and engaging guest, which isn’t something you’d expect when you hear “astrophysicist.” He spoke about a few current issues and news items regarding space, specifically the news that life may exist on Mars and an asteroid that is going to make a near earth pass soon. The main reason he was on was to promote his book The Pluto Files. Yes, he is the man responsible for the IAU demoting Pluto from planet status to dwarf planet status. I wasn’t aware of this book before, but I think I’ll have to put it on my must read list.

The moon, Venus, and Jupiter were clustered together last night and I went out for a gander not long after sunset. It was a pretty neat sight, I really should have tried to take pictures but I was suffering from a severe lack of motivation. If you want to see pictures Space Weather.com has a ton from all over the globe that they’ll be posting soon, but they’re featuring one on their front page right now from the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. It’s a very cool picture.
Space Weather.com is a great resource for finding about other astronomical events like aurora, meteor showers, and whatnot.

That really bright thing at the top is the shuttle Endeavour after launch on the 14th. I wish I could be an astronaut, that would be the most seriously awesome job ever.
This and tons more cool astronomy pics at NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day

Apparently we still don’t know, because the word ‘planet’ won’t be defined until September. It seems that astronomers are just a bunch of slackers. Well, better late than never I suppose.
