Updated: More on Windows Live Writer

September 24th, 2007 . by Jeff Hoy

I tried Windows Live Writer once before and found it to be useful but not very stable at the time.  The Live Writer team has been busy working and releasing new versions and in that time has increased the stability, usability, and feature set.  I use self-hosted WordPress as my blogging platform of choice and the newest versions of Live Writer include much more support for the platform than previous versions did.  It has become much more useful for me and I am now using it almost exclusively for creating new content on my blog.  It makes my posting a lot easier and quicker, especially when I can do all of it offline and post it later.  With this integrated solution I no longer have to use a larger application such as Word or OpenOffice Writer to compose, edit, and spell check my longer posts.  It can all be done within Live Writer without ever going to my blog’s admin panel.

I’m an idiot, the following paragraph is redacted, see the comments.  There is feature that I would like to see added, and that is the automatic creation of thumbnail images from larger images.  There should be a lot of customization options available for that feature.  Thumbnail size, compression, file type, and watermarking I believe would make for a useful addition to this tool.  And it should work seamlessly with the FTP upload option.

Overall I like Windows Live Writer, and I would recommend it to bloggers, especially those that like to compose offline and post later.

Hi, I’m a developer on the WLW team. WLW should already create thumbnails for you–just use Insert Image or drag/drop an image into your post. The image that you see in your post is the “thumbnail”, and your readers can click on that to see the larger version. Or are you referring to some other feature when you say “thumbnail”?

You can add watermarks using the Effects tab that should appear when an image is selected.

    Hope that helps…

Well Joe, I’m an idiot. Thanks for making me look stupid on my own blog :-) .

Anyhow, yeah, that’s exactly what I wanted. I have no idea how I overlooked all of that. It’s just a great testament to you and your team that you know what bloggers want and need in a tool.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff Hoy
